Emeritus Professor Karen Stagnitti is a true luminary in the field, boasting over 40 years of invaluable experience. Professor Stagnitti is a visionary leader who has significantly shaped the landscape of play therapy. Her pioneering work includes the development of Learn to Play Therapy and four impactful play assessments, marking her as a trailblazer in both research and clinical practice.


Joining her is Dr. Siobhan Casey, a seasoned paediatric occupational therapist with a remarkable 18 years of hands-on experience. Dr. Casey, also flying from Australia, holds a Master's qualification in play therapy and is celebrated for her groundbreaking research on the developmental processes of pretend play and self-regulation. Her expertise extends to collaborative work with children, families, and teachers, making her an invaluable asset to this workshop.

Therapists Embark on a Playful Odyssey


For therapists, the Learn to Play Therapy Foundation workshop focuses on understanding and nurturing a child's play. Scheduled for March-April 2024, this immersive workshop aims to equip therapists working with children aged 12 months to 10 years with a profound understanding of play dynamics.


Key Objectives:

  1. Assessment Mastery: Learn how to assess pretend play using the Pretend Play Enjoyment Developmental Checklist and Animated Movie Test.

  2. Insightful Engagement: Gain insight into the reasoning behind engaging a child in play and learn how to plan purposeful play sessions.

  3. Building Play Abilities: Acquire skills to support and enhance a child's play abilities, paving the way for language development, social competence, and cognitive processing.


Led by the eminent Emeritus Professor Karen Stagnitti and Dr. Siobhan Casey, this workshop is backed by a robust evidence base derived from peer-reviewed research.

 

Outline of the 2-day Workshop

Day 1: Unveiling the Magic of Play

  • Morning (2 hours): Exploring the essence of play, the uniqueness of pretend play, and its profound links to language, narrative, social competence, and cognitive processing.

  • Mid-morning (1 hour): Delving into the developmental journey of pretend play.

  • Afternoon: Mastering the assessment tools - Pretend Play Enjoyment Developmental Checklist and Animated Movie Test.


Day 2: Crafting Playful Therapeutic Approaches

  • Morning (2 hours): Understanding the principles and processes of Learn to Play Therapy, creating a safe play environment, and working with children to engage in joyful play.

  • Mid-morning to early afternoon (2 hours): Techniques for engaging children and building play ability, with a focus on 7 to 10-year-olds.

  • Afternoon (2 hours): Unveiling the 10 essential play skills and empowering therapists to explain the play to parents.

For therapists aspiring to become Certified Learn to Play Therapists/Practitioners, this workshop marks Step 1 of the certification process.

For teachers, the Kindergarten/Schools Workshop focuses on the significance of play within the curriculum. Scheduled for March-April 2024, this workshop extends beyond theory, offering practical tools to integrate play-based learning into the classroom.

  1. Curriculum Integration: Identify the importance of play within the curriculum and plan classroom-based play scenarios to support learning outcomes.

  2. Assessment Proficiency: Master the Pretend Play Checklist for Teachers (PPCT) to assess and report on pretend play ability in a group setting.

  3. Innovative Pedagogical Practices: Gain insight into innovative pedagogical practices to support student engagement.


 
Outline of 2-day Workshop

Day 1: Laying the Foundation for Playful Learning

  • Morning (2 hours): Introduction to the Learn To Play Framework, connecting pretend play development to literacy, narrative understanding, social competence, and self-regulation.

  • Mid-morning (1 hour): Exploring the link between pretend play, brain development, emotional regulation, and the neurobiology of learning.

  • Afternoon (2 hours): Understanding assessment using the Pretend Play Checklist for Teachers through case studies and video analysis.

Day 2: Crafting Playful Learning Environments

  • Morning (2 hours): Exploring the concept of Learn To Play, key principles, and techniques of tracking/empathic reflection.

  • Mid-morning (1 hour): Video analysis of Learn To Play, exploring play skills, and group activities to create a narrative.

  • Afternoon (2 hours): Approach planning and implementation, goal setting, and linking pretend play development to self-regulation and social competence.

Registrants will receive the recently released book, 'Learning Through Play in the Primary School: The Why and the How for Teachers and School Leaders,' co-authored by Louise Paatsch, Siobhan Casey, Amity Green, and Karen Stagnitti.
